Understanding Thyroid Hormones
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located in the lower front of the neck. It produces hormones that regulate your metabolism, energy level, heart rate, and body temperature. The Thyroid Profile measures three key hormone markers in the bloodstream: Triiodothyronine (T3), Thyroxine (T4), and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). At Gajanan Laboratory in Washim, we use precise automated immunoassay systems to ensure report accuracy.

Common Thyroid Disorders Checked
A thyroid profile test helps identify two main physiological imbalances:
- Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid): Occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, and cold sensitivity. TSH is typically elevated.
- Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid): Occurs when the thyroid produces excess hormones. Symptoms include rapid heart rate, weight loss, anxiety, hand tremors, and heat intolerance. TSH is typically suppressed.
Hormones Explained
| Hormone Parameter | Biological Function |
|---|---|
| TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) | Produced by the pituitary gland to control thyroid activity. It is the most sensitive marker for thyroid dysfunction. |
| Free/Total T4 (Thyroxine) | The primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Controls metabolic pathways. |
| Free/Total T3 (Triiodothyronine) | The active metabolic form derived from T4 conversion. Helps diagnose hyperthyroid states. |
How to Prepare?
Fasting is not strictly required for a Thyroid Profile test. However, we highly recommend getting your blood sample drawn in the early morning, as TSH levels have a daily diurnal rhythm. If you are taking thyroid medication, check with your physician regarding whether to take your dose before or after the blood draw.
